Limbic System

Limbic System
The emotional engine room of your brain — where feelings, memories, and survival instincts all meet.

A group of brain structures — including the amygdala, hippocampus, and hypothalamus — that together manage emotions, memory, and motivation. Often called the 'emotional brain.' It works below conscious awareness, reacting to situations before the thinking brain (prefrontal cortex) has time to analyse. Many neurodivergent experiences involve differences in limbic system activity.

How it works

Your limbic system — including the amygdala, hippocampus, and hypothalamus — processes emotions, forms memories, and drives survival behaviours. It works faster than your conscious thinking brain, which is why emotions often feel like they hit before logic can catch up.

Think of it like

It's like the engine room of a ship — passengers (your conscious mind) might not see it, but it's driving everything.

What it feels like

Strong emotions seem to come from somewhere deep and primal. That's your limbic system — older, faster, and more powerful than your thinking brain.
