Hypervigilance

Hypervigilance
When your nervous system is permanently set to 'scan for danger' — exhausting, automatic, and not something you can just switch off.

A state of constant alertness where the nervous system continuously scans for potential threats. Every sound, movement, or change in the environment is assessed for danger. Exhausting and involuntary — the brain has learned from experience that the world is unsafe and keeps the alarm system permanently turned up.

How it works

Your brain's threat-detection systems stay chronically activated, continuously monitoring for signs of danger. Every sound, movement, and social cue gets evaluated. This uses enormous amounts of energy and leaves little room for rest or relaxation.

Think of it like

It's like being a security guard who can never clock off — always watching, always assessing, even in your own home.

What it feels like

You can't relax even in safe places. Every creak, every change in someone's tone makes your body tense. You're exhausted from watching, but you can't stop.
