Double Masking

Double Masking
When you're suppressing autistic traits AND ADHD traits at the same time — running two performances at once.

The experience of suppressing both autistic traits AND ADHD traits at the same time during social situations — something common in people with both conditions (AuDHD). Masking one condition is already exhausting. Masking two simultaneously drains executive resources much faster and significantly increases the risk of burnout.

How it works

Your brain is managing two sets of suppression simultaneously: hiding autistic social differences while also reining in ADHD impulsivity and energy. The cognitive load is enormous because the two conditions sometimes pull in opposite directions — needing routine vs. craving novelty.

Think of it like

It's like trying to drive with one foot on the brake and one on the accelerator at the same time.

What it feels like

You feel pulled in two directions constantly — needing to appear calm AND engaged, still AND responsive. The exhaustion is doubled because you're running two costumes at once.
