Burnout (Neurodivergent)

Also known as: Neurodivergent Burnout, ND Burnout

Burnout (Neurodivergent)
When your brain has been sprinting a marathon for years and finally just lies down in the middle of the track.

A state of deep physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion caused by the cumulative effort of functioning in a world not designed for neurodivergent brains. Different from workplace burnout — it comes from the constant effort of masking, sensory management, and social navigation. Recovery often requires significant rest and reduced demands, not just a holiday.

How it works

Your nervous system has been running on overdrive — filtering sensory input, decoding social rules, and suppressing natural responses. Over time, that load outpaces your capacity, so your brain starts shutting down non-essential functions to survive: social energy, executive function, tolerance. If nothing changes, each burnout can lower your overall capacity.

Think of it like

It's like running powerful software on a laptop with no cooling until it overheats, throttles everything, and begins randomly crashing tabs.

What it feels like

You're not being dramatic or lazy — your system has hit its limit. Even texting back feels like lifting weights with your thoughts, and the things you used to manage fine now feel impossible.
