When a thought stops feeling like a thought and starts feeling like the absolute truth about who you are.
When thoughts feel like absolute facts rather than just mental events. Instead of "I am having the thought that I'm a failure," it becomes "I am a failure." The thought and reality blur together. A key concept in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy — learning to notice thoughts as thoughts, not as truth.
How it works
Your brain can get so tangled with its own narratives that the boundary between 'I'm having a thought' and 'this IS reality' disappears. Instead of observing thoughts, you become them. This is especially common in anxiety, depression, and OCD.
Think of it like
It's like standing so close to a painting that all you see is one dark brushstroke — step back, and there's a whole picture.
What it feels like
The thought 'I'm worthless' doesn't feel like a thought — it feels like a fact written into your bones. Learning to see it as just a thought, not truth, is the first step.
