Attention

Attention
Your brain's inner spotlight is powerful — it just doesn't always point where you'd like it to.

The brain's ability to select what to focus on, maintain that focus, shift it when needed, and filter out distractions. Not one thing — attention has several components. ADHD affects the attention system not by removing it but by making it harder to direct it intentionally. The spotlight still exists; it just has its own ideas about where to point.

How it works

Your attention system helps your brain decide which signals to boost and which to quiet. When this system works differently, as in ADHD, your brain still has attention but it's harder to direct on demand. Your spotlight may lock onto whatever feels urgent, interesting, or emotionally strong in that moment.

Think of it like

It's like a stage spotlight that's powerful and real, but sometimes chooses its own direction instead of following the script.

What it feels like

You know you can focus deeply — just not always on the 'right' thing. You feel guilty or lazy, when really your spotlight is powerful but has its own ideas about where to point.
